About Sharon McKee

I was in my 30s when I came to yoga. Having had breast cancer, I was on a mission to explore every aspect of health and wellness I could, treatment and operations left me wanting to find not just physical exercise I could do but also something more holistic.

The first yoga class I went to was a revelation. I sat at the back, feeling out of place, not understanding the words, or knowing how to do the postures, while others seemed to flow with ease and grace all around me. But it ‘did’ something, I didn’t know what but I was intrigued and wanted to learn more, so I took a beginners’ course – and, although I still couldn’t work out how or what exactly happened, I just knew that it had a powerful positive effect, and the healing was more than just physical. I went to classes whenever I could, although worried I would take backward steps when I had further operations – it was never like that. I picked up from wherever I was, going at my own pace and ability, and resume my practice with no pressure or judgement (except occasionally from myself!)

My first yoga teacher spoke Sanskrit words, gave mantras and readings, which intrigued me and I started to read more about the history and philosophy, gaining the understanding that this was something much more than the physical postures I felt I sometimes struggled with.

Some years later I decided to take the opportunity to go on a yoga Teacher Training Course (200 hour TTC). I knew that I wanted to learn more, a lot more, I knew that I wanted to deepen my own practice and understanding, I wasn’t sure whether I’d have the ability or confidence to teach others though… until after the first few days into the course when it had ignited the passion to share yoga with the world! I benefited and learned so much from the course teachers, and other yogis there, I will always be grateful. As my wonderful teacher told me, ‘this is just the beginning’ and so it was, I was happily on my path of life-long learning and sharing.

I am curious about every different take and way of exploring yoga, and learn something from each and every one I’ve shared and enjoyed this yoga path with.

Too often I hear from people, especially women that they are 'not a yoga person’ or aren’t ‘flexible’ or the right shape or age for yoga. There is NO wrong body, shape, age or ability! I pretty much said the same before I came to yoga in my 30s at a particular stage in my life when I found it helped in countless ways, much more than I could have envisaged. I have a passion for sharing yoga with women in particular, and know through my own experience how it can help through every life change and stage, so my focus is now very much on holistic support and Wellbeing for Women.

My desire to learn and teach has so far led me to take other courses including ones for Yin Yoga, Yoga for people with cancer, and 300 hr Yoga Teacher Training with a holistic approach including Traditional Chinese Medicine and Aryuveda. Most recently I am completing a Specialist Menopause Coaching training.
